All Cameras Are Turned On

A strong online presence? A strong online team?

There is much more you can do than you think…

We have been working online for over a year now, and we are still learning something new every day. Online is not the same as being physically present. But even online, you want to inspire your colleagues, give clear instructions, and engage your team members. That is already quite a challenge when you are sitting together in the meeting room or by the coffee machine.

It is an even bigger challenge when you are meeting and presenting online. How do you take the lead and keep your team together? How do you know if you are coming across the way you intend? How do you even know if you are coming across at all? When you are talking to people face-to-face, you quickly see if they are happy, disengaged, upset, or bored. You literally see them on the edge of their seat, slouching, crossing their arms. You hear an annoyed cough, a discontented “mmm,” shuffling feet. You feel the atmosphere.

Can you do that online? Well, not entirely. But there is much more you can do than you might think! And when you discover that, you realize you can apply it again ‘in real life’…

On behalf of ERIKS, we developed 4 short workshops to help create connection, effectiveness, and a strong presence, even online. Last month, we had the opportunity to facilitate these workshops. It was fun and enlightening.

What did the participants say?

It is an experience to consciously listen for an hour, showing that you can get much more out of a conversation, which gives a good feeling to both the listener and the speaker. It is almost a therapeutic experience.” – Bram Koene

My key takeaway from the training ‘Presenting online’ is to make it relevant. First, make sure you know what you want to achieve and think about the most efficient way to let the audience prepare and absorb the content (maybe a meeting, a video, or a slide deck that you send in advance). Second, make it relevant to the people and engage them by mentioning their names.” – Maarten Mackaay

I will try to claim the time and space to at least once really tell a whole story from beginning to end, so the story can play out for the audience and, hopefully, my core message will come across.” – Theresa Eckert

Confronting and interesting” – Alexander van ‘t Hof, after the workshop Better listening, better questioning in a Socratic way.

In the training ‘Inspire with Storytelling,’ we have learned how to reach different people with a story, but also to have a goal with your story, which can be, for example, to connect or inspire or to create interest in a specific topic. It is also important to listen. Have focus and attention to be a better listener.” – Richard Groenewegen.
